The newly formed Silver Arrows Formula One works race team - MERCEDES GP PETRONAS was introduced in the celebrated halls of the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart on the 25th of January 2010. Before a crowd of 600 guests, the team’s management, comprising – Ross Brawn, Nick Fry and Norbert Haug, and the new drivers - young and talented Nico Rosberg and the returning veteran Michael Schumacher were announced to fans, friends and the press.
The team was formed under the stewardship of Ross Brawn, who was helmsman of Brawn GP. In the previous year, Mercedes had been supplying Brawn GP with engines and this love affair culminated in the beginnings of a new team. Proud title partner, PETRONAS cemented the merger and the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS team is eager to hit the grid, March 14th in Bahrain.
Presiding over the event was, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. He had the pleasure of the introductory speech before Rosberg and Schumacher unveiled the 2010 Silver and Green livery on last year's car. This year’s car, the much awaited MPG W01 will debut in Valencia during the pre-season testing scheduled on the 1st of February 2010.
The anticipation is palpable and all eyes are on the two drivers that are set to carve another year into Mercedes' 116 year motorsport canvas.
Ross Brawn summarises the event deftly, calling attention to the work that occurred behind the scenes, hinting at the new car and pre-empting the excitement in the year to come:
"Our team have been working extremely hard throughout last year and over the winter on the development of the MGP W01 and everyone at the team is looking forward to the beginning of the tests. We have two excellent drivers in Nico and Michael, who will form one of the most exciting and one of the best partnerships on the grid, and with the engagement of Mercedes-Benz, Aabar and our new title partner PETRONAS as well as all of our sponsor partners, everyone at the team is looking forward to the 2010 Formula One season with anticipation."
All in all, the team was well received. Enthusiasts are speculating on the Brawn-Schumacher reunion, as well as the partnership between the exceptionally talented upstart Nico and the seven time world champion, Schumacher.
