Drive system and suspension AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system This suspension system, which has a selective passive damping system, provides all-round ride comfort on any road surface.
The AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system can automatically adjust to road conditions and your driving style. To do this, a valve automatically reduces the damping power on each wheel when impact is weaker and thus creates better road roar and tyre vibration characteristics. For stronger impacts the damping effect of the system increases and can improve the vehicle’s overall handling.
Not available for C 250 CDI Sport, C 250 Sport or C 63 AMG.

| | The AMG Sports suspension combines great agility and stability with the ride comfort typical of Mercedes-Benz. A broader track width and stronger camber on both axles as well as tauter spring and damper tuning guarantee the best possible handling characteristics right up to the very limits.
The independent three-link suspension front axle has a track width 36 mm greater than the series-production vehicle. The 100-percent tauter wheel location provides greater stability and precision in all handling situations.
The multi-link suspension rear axle is 12 mm wider than the series vehicle and, like the front axle, features negative camber. Ant-roll bars with a greater diameter all-round reduce the rolling tendency and the lateral inclination in fast curves. Specifically adapted spring and damper rates optimise both spring response and ride comfort.
Only available for the C 250 CDI Sport, C 250 Sport and C 63 AMG.

3-stage Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) This system provides safety and driving pleasure in equal measures. Using the ESP® button, the driver can choose between three different control strategies: "ESP® ON" for a high level of safety, "ESP® SPORT HANDLING MODE" for a sporty driving style and "ESP® OFF" for driving on closed racing circuits. If the ESP® system is switched on and detects a critical situation in terms of driving dynamics, it applies the brakes systematically to one or more wheels according to the situation. In addition, if the system identifies this as necessary, there is an automatic adjustment to the torque.
This way, ESP® helps the driver to stabilise the vehicle within the laws of physics – particularly when cornering and during sudden evasive manoeuvres. - Central feature: the yaw-rate sensor continuously monitors vehicle movement around its vertical axis and compares the actual values measured with the optimum desired value based on the driver's steering input and the vehicle's speed. The instant the vehicle deviates from the ideal line, ESP® intervenes by working to counteract any swerving movements as they occur.
- The best possible traction at all times: The integrated acceleration skid control (ASR) function additionally controls skidding by intervening in engine management during acceleration phases.
- Enhanced safety: ABS as an integral component of ESP® helps to prevent the wheels from locking and to maintain their steering function within the laws of physics.
- Additional components: ESP® thus rounds off the functions of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and acceleration skid control (ASR) with a driving stability aid.
Only available for C 63 AMG.
| | ADAPTIVE BRAKE with HOLD function, Hill-Start Assist, priming and brake drying function in wet conditions The braking system increases driving comfort and safety. On the one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while on the other hand, convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier. The functions at a glance: - Integrated braking system with additional safety and comfort functions, apart from the basic functions such as ABS and BAS.
- Hill-Start Assist:prevents the vehicle from rolling back unexpectedly on inclines when pulling away
- HOLD function: holds the vehicle when stationary without requiring the driver to keep depressing the brake pedal constantly
- Brake drying function: removes the film of water that forms on the brake discs in wet conditions so that full braking power is available without delay
- Priming: benefits the driver by shortening the brake reaction time since the brake pads are brought up close to the disc immediately if the driver removes his foot from the accelerator pedal suddenly

| | Adaptive brake lights, flashing In critical braking situations, specific criteria such as brake pressure and speed are used to activate the adaptive brake lights if necessary. When activated, the brake lights flash to give drivers behind even better warning of the risk of a rear-end collision. The flashing brake lights can help in an emergency situation to significantly shorten the reaction time of road users following behind. The LED adaptive brake lights thus make an important contribution to preventing rear-end collisions.
Studies have shown that drivers' brake-activation response times are shortened by up to 0.2 seconds when emergency braking is indicated by a flashing red warning signal instead of conventional brake lights. At a speed of 80 km/h, this reduction in response time corresponds to a reduction in stopping distance of approximately 4.40 metres. The brake lights flash with a frequency of approx. 3 Hertz (with incandescent bulbs) or approx. 5 Hertz (with LEDs); tests have shown this frequency range to be particularly effective.
The adaptive brake lights are activated if the initial speed is greater than 50 km/h and Brake Assist BAS has recognised an emergency braking situation; or the brake pressure is more than 75 percent of the maximum.
In addition, the hazard warning signal is automatically activated as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill, if the speed had been greater than 70 km/h when braking was initiated.

| | Airbags for driver and front passenger In a collision the airbags help to protect the torso and head of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident. The deployment of the airbags is commensurate to the severity of the impact.
| | Outside temperature display The outside temperature is indicated on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. This ensures, for example, that the driver is informed when temperatures drop close to freezing point, allowing the appropriate precautions to be taken.
| | BAS Brake Assist system with brake force boost if an emergency braking manoeuvre is detected The system can recognise an emergency stop by the driver and increases the brake pressure within fractions of a second to shorten the stopping distance. To do so, Brake Assist interprets the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed.
A sensor permanently monitors the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and transmits this data to the electronic control unit.
If an unusually high pedal speed is registered, the system concludes that there is an emergency braking situation. The system then helps the driver to perform an emergency stop by automatically increasing brake pressure in the wheel brake cylinders.
ABS continues to precisely meter the braking power up to the slip threshold, which ensures that steering control is maintained. If the driver reduces brake pedal pressure, automatic brake boosting is immediately deactivated.
| | Brake pad wear indicator warning lamp for front-axle brakes The brake pad wear indicator lamp warns the driver if the brake linings on the front axle brakes are worn and need to be changed.
| | | | Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) In critical handling situations the ESP® Electronic Stability Program can keep the vehicle from skidding. With targeted brake interventions on individual wheels ESP® reduces oversteer or understeer tendencies and thus increases handling safety. The acceleration skid control (ASR) ensures that the wheels do not spin when accelerating. Especially when moving off on snow, ice and loose chippings, the acceleration skid control prevents individual wheels from spinning and the vehicle from sliding out to the side.
If the ESP® system detects a critical situation, it applies the brakes systematically to one or more wheels according to the situation. Should the system consider it necessary, it will also make an automatic adjustment to engine torque. In this way ESP® helps the driver to stabilise the vehicle within the laws of physics – particularly when cornering and during sudden evasive manoeuvres.
- The best possible traction at all times: the integrated ASR traction control system additionally controls wheel slip when accelerating with interventions in the engine management system.
- Enhanced safety: ABS as an integral component of ESP® helps prevent the wheels from locking and maintain their steering function.
- Additional components: ESP® rounds off the functions of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and acceleration skid control (ASR) to help with driving stability.

| | The kneebag on the driver’s side helps to protect the legs in a collision and also stabilises the entire body. It can thus help mitigate potentially severe injuries sustained in an accident.
| | Automatic headlamp range adjustment The headlamp beam control automatically adjusts the light cones of the headlamps to the vehicle’s pitch (pitch angle). In this way the lighting of the road ahead is always optimal for the driver, and oncoming road users and vehicles travelling ahead are not dazzled.
| | Pelvisbags for driver and front passenger In a side-on collision the sidebags help to protect the torso and pelvic area of driver and front passenger. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident.
The pelvisbag is deployed in the space between the front-seat occupants’ pelvic region and the door panelling. The pelvisbag then braces itself against the impact area, pushing the occupant’s pelvic region away from the door panelling at a very early stage of the collision.
| | Permanent monitoring of the tyre pressure increases driving safety and the service life of the tyres. The tyre pressure on all four wheels is monitored by sensors and shown on the multifunction display.
