The Mercedes-Benz safety concept employs a range of measures to ensure safe driving. The control and display system is tailored to driver requirements. And a broad range of electronic systems are available to support and assist the driver in challenging situations.
Make sure nothing escapes your attention even in dark conditions thanks to the standard-specification Headlamp Assist, which can automatically switch on your lights. Available as optional extras: bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime driving lamps, active light function, automatic headlamp range adjustment, headlamp cleaning system, and LED indicators and tail lights.
The optional DISTRONIC proximity control system helps you to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead in the speed range 30 to 180 km/h. If necessary, the system brakes at a deceleration speed of up to 2 metres per second and re-accelerates automatically (if required) to the preset road speed.
If there is a risk of oversteering/understeering (on a wet road, for example), the dynamic handling control systems, which have been optimised for the R-Class RWD and 4MATIC AWD systems, can intervene to help the driver restabilise the vehicle. As soon as the sensors detect a critical handling situation, brake pressure can be applied to one or more wheels as required and engine output adjusted. The Electronic Stability Program ESPĀ® is included as standard with the R-Class. The system includes Brake Assist (BAS), acceleration skid control (ASR) and ESPĀ® trailer stabilisation. In addition, the Electronic Traction System 4ETS provides optimum traction (in conjunction with 4MATIC all-wheel drive).
