The primary notion behind the launch of PRE-SAFE® by Mercedes-Benz in 2002 was the fact that valuable seconds are often squandered prior to an accident. PRE-SAFE® (optional extra) is able to utilise this time to great effect. The ESP® and BAS sensory systems can recognise critical driving situations, such as heavy oversteer/understeer, abrupt steering manoeuvres, and panic or emergency braking.
The PRE-SAFE® system evaluates this information and can initiate preventive measures in typical critical situations in order to protect vehicle occupants. The seat belts can be tightened, the front passenger seat moved into a more favourable crash position (in conjunction with the optional memory package), and the side windows and optional panoramic glass sunroof can be closed.
The optional PRE-SAFE® brake[1] can provide valuable additional support. Should a vehicle ahead brake quickly or the Coupé approach an obstacle, the PRE-SAFE® brake (available in conjunction with DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control) can independently initiate a full brake application. The system is backed up by DISTRONIC PLUS radar sensors, which can identify a potential collision. BAS PLUS Brake Assist can also support emergency braking by automatically building up full braking power. PRE-SAFE® underlines Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to developing and promoting innovative technologies based on improving safety on the roads.
