Engines and chassis

ECO start/stop function[1] The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and vehicle emissions by switching off the engine when the vehicle is standing still. As soon as a gear is engaged or the driver’s foot leaves the brake, the engine restarts automatically.
Natural gas drive, bivalent, NGT BlueEFFICIENCY[2] The natural gas drive in the B 170 NGT offers the optimum combination of cost-cutting and environmental friendliness, all with a range of around 1000 kilometres (if using the volume from both fuel tanks). It is highly efficient due to the bivalent drive which can run on natural gas or premium grade petrol. Using a combination of BlueEFFICIENCY technologies the combustion of fuel is lowered down to only what is absolutely necessary, and in many countries low prices for compressed natural gas also reduce operating costs. At an output of 85 kW/116 hp for the B 170 NGT the consumption is for example 4.9 kilograms of natural gas per 100 kilometres. And the vehicle produces only 135 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
Speed-sensitive electromechanical steering with STEER CONTROL assistance system The speed-sensitive steering reduces the power steering assistance as the speed increases, which provides a stable driving experience even at high speeds. At lower speeds the power steering assistance is once again continually increased. This also has advantages for parking, which becomes significantly easier. The STEER CONTROL steering assistance system provides the driver with an improved steering feel and also reduces consumption figures as energy is required only for movements of the steering wheel.

Selective damping system The selective damping system increases road roar and tyre vibration characteristics as the suspension automatically adjusts the spring and damper system according to the driving situation. When driving in a straight line the damper actuation is reduced, and on winding stretches of road it is increased to its maximum if needed.

Safety

Adaptive front airbags and head/thorax sidebags for driver and front passenger The two-stage front airbags are activated depending on the severity of the accident. In addition the head-thorax sidebags (larger sidebags with additional head protection, 16-litre volume) on the outer sides of the front seat backrests are deployed in the event of high lateral acceleration and provide outstanding safety for the driver and front passenger.
Adaptive brake light, flashing When you make an emergency stop the adaptive brake lights blink every 5.5 seconds. This blinking of the brake lights warns the vehicles behind you and allow them more time to react. If the vehicle is braked to a complete stop, the hazard warning lamps also switch on.

Brake Assist (BAS) The Brake Assist can provide protection against accidents by recognising emergency braking situations based on the speed with which the brake pedal is depressed and then automatically builds up full braking power. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) then meters the braking power up to the slip threshold, which ensures that steering control is maintained. Once the driver releases the brake pedal, the automatic brake boosting is immediately terminated.

Bulb failure indicator
Crash-respons. emergency lights If an accident should occur the crash-responsive emergency lighting makes it easier for the vehicle occupants to be rescued and supports the efforts of rescue workers. After a delay the interior and footwell lighting switches on and aids rescue measures via its interconnection with the hazard warning lamps, engine shut-off and door-lock release.
