The ECO start/stop function reduces fuel consumption and emissions by automatically switching off the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill (for example when in a traffic jam or at traffic lights). Vehicles equipped with the ECO start/stop function possess a starter/generator in place of the starter.
Intelligent control electronics allow the starter/generator to supply the electrical energy for the vehicle's electrical system and, in starter mode, the torque required to start the engine.
The ECO start/stop function can be deactivated manually using a switch and is switched off automatically when certain criteria are not fulfilled, such as for instance engine temperature, outside temperature, climate control in load operation (networked with climate control system).
