Adaptive brake light, flashing
The adaptive brake lights warn vehicles behind that emergency braking is taking place. If the driver makes an emergency stop from a speed greater than 50 km/h, the brake lights flash in order to warn traffic behind. And if the vehicle comes to a stop from a speed greater than 70 km/h, the hazard warning lamps are switched on automatically.

Active bonnet, reversible (pedestrian protection system)[4]
The active bonnet can reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists. If the system identifies a collision, the rear section of the active bonnet rises up by five centimetres using spring force. This produces additional deformation space to absorb the impact energy.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) | |
The standard-specification ATTENTION ASSIST can warn the driver and recommend taking a break as soon as it detects signs of driver drowsiness. The system monitors the driver’s behaviour in particular. If it deviates from a previously determined profile, visual and audible warnings are emitted.
| |
Brake Assist can protect against accidents by identifying emergency braking situations based on the speed the brake pedal is depressed and then automatically building up full braking power. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) then meters the braking power up to the slip threshold, which is how steering control is maintained. Once the driver releases the brake pedal, automatic brake boosting is immediately terminated.

ADAPTIVE BRAKE system with HOLD function, hill start assist, priming and brake drying function
The ADAPTIVE BRAKE system improves ride comfort and safety by helping to execute critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and making difficult driving situations easier with convenience functions.
These include the HOLD function, which is activated by briefly depressing the brake pedal when the vehicle is at a standstill. It keeps the vehicle from rolling unintentionally at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic. Hill-start assist prevents the vehicle from rolling back when pulling away on a slope both in forward and in reverse gears. It holds the vehicle briefly when you have removed your foot from the brake, allowing you time to change to the accelerator pedal.
The "brake drying" function removes the water film which forms on the brake discs in wet conditions, thus ensuring that full braking pressure is available without the slightest delay. And with the "priming" function, the system swiftly moves the brake pads close to the discs immediately if the driver removes his foot from the accelerator suddenly. This reduces brake response time, which in turn shortens the stopping distance.

Driving dynamics systems: ESP® or 4ETS/4ESP® (4MATIC) and vehicle/trailer stabilization
ESP® and 4ETS/4ESP® enhance safety in critical driving situations. This dynamic control system maintains and/or restores traction and directional stability through appropriate intervention of wheel brakes and engine management. ESP® trailer stabilisation ensures safe car/trailer driving. It can recognise problematic driving situations, such as safety-critical trailer movement, and counteract these with alternating brake actuation on each side.

PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system
PRE-SAFE® can identify critical driving scenarios and, if necessary, activate safety systems to reduce the chance of injury to vehicle occupants. This is based on PRE-SAFE® continuously monitoring sensor data from systems such as ESP® and BAS and identifying driving situations such as oversteer/understeer and emergency stops.
If a critical driving situation is detected, the systems can respond within fractions of a second. The electronic belt tensioners are activated, the front-passenger seat is moved to a more favourable crash position (only in conjunction with memory package) and the side windows and the sliding/tilting sunroof (optional) are automatically closed.

5 head restraints, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints in front, head restraints in rear can be lowered
The crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraint system is designed to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. NECK-PRO is integrated in the front head restraints and supports the head at an earlier stage in the event of a rear-end collision. If the sensors register a crash, they release a pre-tensioned spring that pushes the head restraints forwards and upwards. After deployment, the head restraints can be returned manually to their original position.
