Mercedes-Benz engineers have achieved exceptional results in terms of agility, smooth operation, consumption and emission figures with the new-concept 4-cylinder diesel powerplant with three output levels.

The engines are significantly stronger, yet at the same time thriftier and cleaner than their preceding models. In order to achieve this, technologies from the BlueEFFICIENCY package of measures were composed for each model individually, so as to attain the greatest possible environmental compatibility. Through the use of further improved common-rail injection systems with injection pressures of up to 2000 bar, high-precision piezo-injectors that enable a particularly rapid and precise dosage of the injected fuel, as well as a new turbocharger concept, the output of the BlueEFFICIENCY powerplants is up to 20 percent higher, while the torque has been increased by as much as 25 percent. At the same time, it was possible to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by as much as 23% compared with the previous models. Newly-developed ceramic fast glowplugs improve the cold running characteristics, while two Lanchester balancer shafts enhance smoothness of operation, enabling the highest degree of ride comfort.

The E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY delivers a torque rating of 360 Nm (330 Nm with 5-speed automatic transmission). The E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY develops 400 Nm and the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY an enormous 500 Nm at a consumption of only approx. 5.7 l/100 km (manual transmission).

The smooth running characteristics as well as the low consumption and emissions figures of the four 6-cylinder diesel engine models are impressive. This group includes the E 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the E 350 BlueTEC, the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the E 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with permanent all-wheel drive. Both CDI models and the CDI 4MATIC model meet the EU 5 emissions standard; the BlueTEC model with urea injection even fulfils the requirements of the future EU 6 emissions standard. The E 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY delivers 150 kW at 4000 rpm releasing a torque of up to 500 Nm. The E 350 BlueTEC, the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the E 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY develop a torque of up to 540 Nm. The E 350 BlueTEC delivers 155 kW, while the E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the E 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY develop 170 kW each.

Their great power output range makes them ideal for towing trailers, leaving still enough power reserves to tackle demanding handling situations. They give economic and clean performance, thanks among other things to the precision piezo injectors fitted. In addition, a particulate filter reduces soot emissions.
